The state of being ‘independent’ conveys notions of freedom from outside control and direction. A view backed by the Cambridge Dictionary, which equates independence with ‘self-determination, self-government and self-rule’. If anything, the past 45 years serve as a testament to this being very far from the experienced reality for small, island developing states, such as our island home – Saint Lucia. Buffeted by the challenges associated with global development, we have had to remain nimble in order to live and grow. From financial crises to global health pandemics and impacts of climate change, the past years have been a crash course on how to do more with less.
All this has served to make each and every achievement of the citizens of Saint Lucia even more remarkable. Not just those of the ilk of Sirs Arthur Lewis and Derek Walcott but also those of Jonathan Preville, Claudine Walker, Norbert Findlay, Myrtle Emmanuel, Zorida Norville… (feel free to add your own names to the list), for a country is richer for the diverse imaginations and interests of all its people, whether home or abroad.
22nd February 2024 will see the celebrating of Saint Lucia’s 45th anniversary of independence from British colonial rule. As we reflect on how far we have come, we at BEYOND IYANOLA CIC extend congratulations to everyone of Saint Lucian heritage who hold our country to heart. We mark this day with renewed faith in our ability to do things our way.
So in short, Saint Lucia as a country is on a brilliant trajectory for continued growth and development. Long may we strive for self-expression and self-development.
